WHAT WE KNOW ARCHAEOLOGICALLY ABOUT JERICHO

1) John Garstand excavated at Jericho from 1930-36. Jericho’s City 4 > only 1/3 of his site was excavated by his chief critic Kathleen Kenyon in the1950’s. Garstang found two colored pottery (Bi-Chrome ware) originally from Cyprus (1550-1400 B.C.E.) dated to the era of the Exodus. Kenyon denied finding any in the 1950’s. Kenyon dug in an impoverished area.

2) Kathleen Kenyon, Jericho Excavator from 1952-58 dug only 1/3 of Garstang’s site. Her analysis of Jericho was based upon what was NOT found as opposed to what WAS FOUND. Kenyon overlooked bowls, cooking pots and juglets that Garstang found dated to around 1400 B.C.E. > The destruction of Jericho.

CONCLUSION

... a) Joshua did conquer Jericho about 1400 B.C. based upon pottery analyzed in 1982/1983 by Archaeologist Bryant Wood.

....b) Garstang and Kenyon both found grain preserved within large jars (See the biblical story concerning the flax, the two spies and Rahab) > Joshua 2-5.

....c) The destruction of Jericho occurred during Harvest time (food still preserved in jars at Jericho was discovered) .

....d) A Fallen Red Brick Wall (Joshua 6:20) was discovered. The Hebrews ran up the fallen brick into the City and destroyed its inhabitants.

....e) City 4 of Jericho was destroyed by fire (Joshua 6:24).
